SURVIVORS OF HOUSTON LOCATED

Washington, Aug. 28.

About 300 survivors of the American heavy cruiser Houston have been located in a Japanese prison camp in Thailand according to Lieut.-Colonel Nicol Smith, a strategic services officer who worked with the Thailand underground movement. The Houston was sunk with the Australian cruiser Perth and the Dutch destroyer Evertsen on 28th February, 1942. after participating in the battle of Java Sea. Lieut.-Colonel Smith said two members of the Houston’s crew escaped from the prison camp a fortnight ago to a guerrilla camp. The Associated Press of America recalls that after the battle of the Java Sea on 27th February. 1942 the Houston, Perth and Evertsen left Tanjong on the night of 28th February, with the intention of passing through Sunda Strait. The Evertsen about midnight radioed that a sea battle was in pro-

gress at the northern end of Sunda Strait. Shortly afterwards the Evertsen reported that two enemy cruisers had intercepted her and she was beaching 4ierself in a sinking condition. This message was the last word received from any of the three ships.
