MANPOWER BUDGET

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES SURVEY IN NELSON DISTRICT REGIONAL PLANNING COUNCILS SUPPORT The carrying out of the survey of post-war employment opportunities within the Nelson region was supported by the Nelson Regional Planning Council at yesterday’s meeting and all employers were recommended to co-operate with the Government officers conducting the survey.

Mr J. C. Redward. Investigating Officer of the Organisation for National Development, said the survey of postwar employment opportunities would provide essential information for the smooth rehabilitation of returning servicemen and for the re-employment of civilian workers displaced by the returned men. The survey would provide the. information for the preparation of a basic manpower budget on which future development and full employment policies could be based. The budget would provide Regional Councils with important information. On the one side would be the number required to be employed in businesses of their own or as employees and on the other side would be the known jobs which were available. Until the report was prepared Regional Councils would not know how far they could go in recommending new works. The National Service Department was accepting responsibility for conducting the survey. It was important to that department as it would have the handling of the individual requests for employment and it was essential for it to know where people could be employed. It had been suggested that the local authorities’ manpower survey should be carried out by the Regional Planning Councils’ secretaries. The O.N.D had carrie i out the survey in the manufacturing industries.

Mr C. I. Kidson moved: “That this conference of members of the Nelson Regional Planning Counoil and its sub-committees supports the carrying out of the survey of post-war employment opportunities within the Nelson region and strongly recommends all employers to co-operate with the Government officers concerned.” The mover said it was essential that such a survey should be made. He understood that all the immediately available ’abour in the Nelson district could be employed on the projects already decided on. Mr A. G. Betts, junior, seconded the motion, which was carried.
