CHAMPIONSHIP DECIDED WIN lOR DOVEDALE HUIA RUNNERS UP Ground conditions were good for the Rugby match between Dovedale and Riwaka. played at Rugby Park. Mot ucka on Saturday when Dovedale defeated Riwaka by 14 points to 3. Riwaka fielded a man hort and were somewhat unlucky in not getting more points as the game was hard fought throughout. By winning this match Dovedale become winners of the competition and champion-hip shield. with Huia in second place, only one point behind. The latter won the benefit shield and Huia awarded to the winners of the last round. Riwaka gained the first points when P. Bickley picked the ball up after a forward rush and scored in the corner. Shortly afterwards Haycock, for Dovedale. evened the scores with a good try under the post.- Play was very even for a while until Riwaka were penalised for holding the ball, and C. Davis was successful in kicking a penalty goal making Dovedale 6. Riwaka 3. The score was unchanged when the whistle blew for half time. ithin five minutes of the change : over C. Davis secured the ball and after ■ a good run scored a try in the corner. Play was very even throughout the second half and there was no further scoring until close to the end of the game when Haycock picked up the bail and ran from the halfway line to score under the posts J. Havvkes converted the try. leaving Dovedale the winneis by 14 points to 3. Mr D. Askew was jr control of the game. HUIA DEFEAT UNITED The second senior game at Motueka on Saturday resulted in a very easy win for Huia by 31 points to 3. after a I one-sided game. United taking the field j with only 12 players. Huia opened the scoring early when Bisley scored a try originating from a good back movement. Fry converted. Soon afterwards, with Huia attacking hard. Shuker scored a nice try under the posts, whi‘h Fry also converted, giving Huia a lead of 10 points early in the game. Huia pressed home their advantage land T. Brougham scored from a forward j rush. Offside play by United resulted t in Huia being awarded a penalty from i which Fry kicked a goal. Towards the ; end of the first half J. Morgan scored a runaway try which was unconverted ; and at the interval Huia had a lead of ! 19 points and United had not scored. Huia continued to press home the attack in the second half and Thorp scored a try in the corner. The scoring i for United opened when Warner took a penalty kick in front of the posts, making the score Huia 22 United 3. ■ Unconverted tries scored by D. Kelly ; and J. Morgan and a penalty kick by Kelly almost on time brought Huia'* total to 31. The United backs played a good defensive game, but against overwhelming odds. Mr V. Harris was the referee. The junior match at Motueka on Sat- • urday resulted in Riwaka defeating Upper Moutere by 14 points to 3.
