NELSON COUNCIL SUB-COMMITTEES SOON TO START WORK SUGGESTIONS FROM PUBLIC INVITED At a meeting of the Nelson Regional Planning Council yesterday j afternoon arrangements were made i for the election of the chairmen of i sub-committees and for the holding of th e first meetings of the commit- j tees. Suggestions which might be ; useful 1o the committees in their work : are to be issued to each one by tiie j Organisation for National Develop- j ment'. It was explained by the chair- i man, Mr E. R. Neale, that in accord-| ance with the constitution the chair-: men of the sub-committees would | constitute the Nelson Council execu- i tive, which would meet when the re- | ports of the committees were ready for consideration. The real work of! the committees would now start in! earnest and it may be some time j before some of them could have their renorts prepared. It was decided to invite the public to make suggestions for th e consideration of the sub-committees in the prenaration of their reports. Those present were Messrs E. R. Neale, M. MacLeod, L. E. H. The chairman said it was good to see the representatives of all parts of the district present and to find that such a keen interest was being taken in the Planning Council. The organisation was a new one and if it was to be given a reasonable chancel of functioning regular attendance would be necessary. IN ADVISORY CAPACITY, Mr J. C. Redward, Investigating Officer for the Organisation for National Development, spoke on the aims and objects of the Regional I lanning Council. He said that the councils had been formed on the recommendation of the Municipal Association. and sunoortori bv the New Zealand Counties’ Association. There would be 25 regional councils and 23 of them would be in operation by the end of September. Through the Regional Councils all organisations in the district could take a part in the planning of the future development of the area. In answer to Mr Baigent Mr Redward said that the Regional Councils were established in an advisory capacity only, and their recommendations would be made to the 0.N.D.. which was the co-ordinating body. Regional policies had to be co-ordinated with national policies. Within its own district recommendations could be made to local authorities.
