LIQUOR IN KING COUNTRY

MAGISTRATE URGES LICENSED PREMISES Wellington August 28. The Royal Commission on Licensing resumed sittings in Wellington to-day. Mr A Coleman. S.M.. of Feildfng. basing his arguments on his experience as a magistrate in the King Country, urged that licensed premises should be established there in the interests .of Maoris and* white population alike. Under the present conditions liquor imported into the proclaimed area was customarily consumed at so-called parties, sometimes extending over a couple of days and usually until all was used up. resulting in conditions which were more often than not sordid and disgraceful. On the other hand in licensed areas excessive consumption by Maoris on licensed premises was not prevalent. Mr Coleman said Maoris were in many ways different from pakehas and required different treatment as was shown by the mas? of special legislation upon other ma'ters. He had heard no suggestions that these statutes should be repealed in order to put Maoris on all fours with pakehas and remove the distinction between them.
