HUGE CROWD IN CITY TO-DAY
Ceremony at Church Steps HIGH SPIRITS GIVE WAY TO MORE SOBER MOOD Large Church Attendances Last Night Yesterday’s spirit of unrestrained rejoicing by the crowds of merry-makers in the city streets gave way to a more sober mood to-day when one of the largest crowds which has ever gathered on Church Hill, the steps and Trafalgar street took part in the Civic Service of Thanksgiving. Nelson has never before seen such happv scenes of community rejoicing as those of VJ-Day yesterday. The thousands of people who packed the main streets last evening for the torchlight procession made one of largest night crowds in the history of the city. Large congregations assembled at the churches last evening when Thanksgiving Services were held. It would be difficult to estimate the number at the Church Steps this morning, but a reasonable estimate would be 10,000, including the residents of Nelson, Tahunanui and many from the immediate suburban and country districts.
