BRITISH ELECTION RESULT
MR H. ATMORE’S COMMENT (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) Wellington, July 28. A reference to the British General Election results was made by Mr H. Atmore (Independent, Nelson) when speaking in the world charter debate in the House of Representatives. He said the achievement of the Labour Party would do more to bring hope to the people of the Continent than any olh er happening in the last 20 years. During recent times, said Mr Atmore. the Conservative policy of the United Kingdom had been devoted to an attempt to re establish the old order in the countries over-run and later recov ered by Allied arms. The common man had awakened from his sleep. Britain during the war had been a hive of industry but had not had a Government representative of the workers. One had been elected years ago but it was without power. Britain was one of the most class-ridden countries of the world. The giant that had been asleep had awakened and there was hope for 2.000.000.000 people. It was a tremendous event and an occasion for rejoicing. Governments would now have to consider whether the first charge on national production was to be set asiae for interest payments for war and other expenditure or to be used to provide decent living standards for the people.
