SOUTH PACIFIC MISSIONARIES
ARCHBISHOP COMMENTS ON CONFERENCE Wellington, June 8. The purpose’ of the recent conference in Sydney of the Anglican Board of Missions in Australia was given yesterday by Archbishop West-Watson, New Zealand representative at the conference, when he arrived in Wellington. The missionary bishops of Melanesia. Polynesia and New Guinea attended the conference. “We had in mind the Anzac Pact and its ideals for the preparation of the native races in the islands for ultimate control of their own affairs.” the. Archbishop said. “The relationship of governments and missions in regard to educational and medical services were discussed, and also the question of indentured labour.” Future possibilities of extending missionary work in the South Pacific, and new circumstances which might arise from the present war were considered. Commenting on the possibility of holding a South Pacific conference of missionary societies of all the churches except the Roman Catholic, he*said that such a conference would lead to a common front to common problems. The Archbishop left Wellington for Christchurch last night.
