STOKE WATER SUPPLY

reticulatton of whole area COUNTY COUNCIL’S REQUEST FOR SUBSIDY In the course of his annual report to the Waimea County Council the chairman, Councillor J. Corder, expressed the hope that the Government would accede to a request by the council for a subsidy to assist in meeting the cost of reticulation work which would enable Stoke residents to receive a water supply from the Roding scheme.

“During 1944, the Richmond Borough Council laid a water main from Stoke to Richmond,” the chairman said. “By agreement between the borough council and the county council the main is to be used jointly by the two districts when the Stoke scheme is completed. Meanwhile consumers adjacent to the pipeline are being supplied by the Richmond Borough Council. “On 26th February a deputation from the county council waited on the Minister of Finance and asked that a subsidy be made available to enable the rest of the Stoke water’ supply scheme to be carried out at a cost which would not involve an increase in the rate contemplated when the loan proposals were approved. “In view of the difficulties encountered by the council through the restrictions of imports, and the outbreak of war in 1939 and in view of the benefit derived by the Government from the'supply of water to the Mental Hospital Department from the Stoke waterworks reserve (to which the ratepayers in the special area contributed a considerable proportion of the cost) it is hoped that the Government will favourably consider the request and assist the council to carry out the much-need-ed reticulation and enable the Stoke residents to participate in the Roding river water supply scheme.”
