MR <J. MILNER APPEALS TO NELSONIAN S * [To the Editor] Sir,- Kindly grant me space to remind the residents of Nelson District that the opening day for the 1945 Victory War Loan is fixed for Monday. 14th May. and respectfully request their Interest and support. The urgency and magnitude of New Zealand’s war work and war needs require the help of one and ail. Nelson district has an excellent record in every war loan and patriotic work to date, and of this we are proud. We pride ourselves, not unjustly, on being a district highly geared for war savings. To-day the call is for even more. The war needs demand it. Final victory on all fronts and swift recovery after victory are dependent on it. Our quota in this loan is £523,000; in the last loan it was £671,000. Notwithstanding the reduction, the task set us all is of the first magnitude and utmost importance and no one can dispute the fact. Securities available are:— 2£ per cent. Stock repayable 15th April 1950-51. 3 per cent. repayable 15th April 1956-59. 3 per cent. National Savings (1945 Victory Bonds) maturing 5 years from date of issue. 3 per cent, deposits to National Savings Accounts repayable 30th June 1947. I am confident that all those able to do so. and recognising their duty, will enthusiastically support the 1945 Victory Loan, which we all hope will be our last war loan. The responsibility rests in our hands. To this call of duty "try to do what you ought and you will have no doubt what you ought to do.” Remember there is no better investment to-day than war loans. In the continuing progress of the war there is a constant need for money. The ‘only way to meet the increasing need is for every resident to invest to the limit of his or her ability so to do. Victory must be paid for. No one else can do your share, because your share represents not only lending your money, but also your duly, interest, enthusiasm and co-operation.

This is no time to quit or change to less essential duties, and it certainly Is no time to relax. The key note of the Victory Loan is to invest in gratitude for the blood, toil, tears and sweat sacrificed to save us all; in thanksgiving for the victory and peace now a certainty, and close at hand. Therefore, let us all save by investing in the Victory Loan as hard as our boys have fought for us, united to make the loan a great success. To use the words of our Winston Churchill—" One good strong heave all together.” We have to keep on saving to help pay for the war in Europe and the Pacific, and to prepare for the tasks and uncertain times which lie ahead. I therefore appeal to residents of Nel son district to invest promptly in a spirit of gratitude and thanksgiving for all that has been done for us. In fulfulling this obligation we must never forget it is our privilege, and that he who invests quickly invests twice. We owe it to our boys: it is the least we can do. As a special feature every endeavour is to be made in all districts to have at least half the amount of the loan subscribed by the opening day. The 1945 Victory War Loan opens on Monday, 14th May. Thanking you in confident anticipation of support and interest —I am, etc., C. MILNER. Chairman. Nelson District War Loan Committee. Nelson, 4th May.
