CONTINUED GAINS
EIGHTH AND FIFTH ARMY DESPERATE RESISTANCE AT SANTERNO I FRENCH OFFENSIVE IN ALPS London, Apl. 13. An Allied communique from Italy reports that Eighth Army troops south of Lake Comacchio have advanced some distance against partially disorganised resistance. They, farther south, have enlarged their bridgehead across the Santerno against desperate resistance and driven °ff a number of heavy counter-attacks. Eighth Army Italian* In the Apennines have advanced several miles d«wn the upper Santerno Valley. Fifth Army Americans in the sector north of IVlassa continue to advance astride the Ligurian highway. Reuter's Paris correspondent says French troops have gone over to the offensive in the Alps front in co-ordination with General Mark Clark’s offensive. "The Times” correspondent on the Italian front says Eighth Army troops who landed four miles behind the enemy’s positions on the southern shore of Lake Comacchio, have captured two villages and linked up with other forces advancing astride the Reno River. On the Fifth Army front the Americans are now well beyond Carrara.
