COUNTY COUNCIL'S REGRET
RECENT P.W.D. REORGANISATION
"The council notes with regret that Nelson will no longer be classified as a Public Works district and hopes that this alteration does not foreshadow any reduction in future work, particularly in view of the many major road improvement schemes which are urgently needed,” stated a motion which was carried unanimously at yesterday’s meeting of the Waimea County Council. In moving the motion; the chairman, Councillor J. Corder. said that in view of the Government's support for decentralisation the present action seemed a retrograde step. Councillor L. A. Higgins who seconded the motion, remarked that the Government’s action could not be helpful to the council as it would be a big handicap to have to deal with an office in Wellington instead of with local officers.
