The opportunity of a lifetime came to Messrs Holland and Doidge when after flying irom London to Italy, they paid a quick visit to the New Zealand front and enjoyed a grandstand view of the devastating air bombardment preceding the fighters’ assault. Watching fr6m the commanding height of a five-story building overlooking the Senio. the visitors saw the full display of Allied air might. Accompanied by General Freyberg, they were fascinated spectators also of the massing of troops, vehicles and tanks preparatory to the ground assault. Still close up to the battle line they later watched a thunderous artillery barrage that completed the softening-up process and they were still there when the attack went in.
