The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Easter meeting was concluded on Saturday under favourable conditions. Racing was full of interest and there was another big increase in totalisator receipts. The Challenge Stakes proved to be a triumph for older horses engaged, three of their number. Beau Cheval, Golden Souvenir and John Gay accounting for two-year-olds. A 1 Sirat and Confusion were slow to begin and neither made up their early disadvantage. Cinderella acted as pilot till well into the home straight, (Where she retired in favour of John Gay, with Beau Cheval and Golden Souvenir handy. The leader weakened inside the distance and then Beau Cheval came along with a great finishing effort, which landed him a comfortable winner by two lengths from Golden Souvenir. Close up came John Gay, the others being headed by A 1 Sirat. The latter ran a disappointing race as did Confusion, while Gigli was beaten a long way from home. This marked Mr Murphy’s first win in the Challenge Stakes.

Tuis completed her double at the meeting by just struggling home half a head in front of Falconbridge in the Gimcrack Stakes. She was always handily placed and when Desert Strife faded out, she looked to be the comfortable winner. Then Falconbridge, by a great finishing effort, almost got up as the post was reached. The withdrawal of Typhoon and Longsword left a nice field of 14 to contest the Great Autumn Handicap. First in, who looked particularly well, was installed as a better favourite than Lance Wing, while Immediate and Lowry Bay were improved by their first day’s racing. Lowry Bay, Bridge Acre and Lord Nuffield set a solid pace from the start and they caitried on along the back. Prominent amongst others were First In, Lance Wing, Palfrey and Immediate. There was little change in the order till the home straight was entered, where Bridge Acre, Lord Nuffield and Lowry Bay were still at the head of affairs. A furlong from thg post First In, with Palfrey handy, drew away and they fought out a desperate finish which ended in favour of the former by a neck. At the head of the others came Lowry Bay, followed by Immediate, Foxleap and Signal Officer. First In is a quality-looking daughter of Siegfried and Gobble and is owned by the Southland sportsman, Mr S. Taylor, for whom she is trained by D. Wilson at Gore. Palfrey showed that he is not yet a back number by the great finishing run he put in, while Lowry Bay repeated his usual consistency by filling third place a head in front of Immediate.

Pensacola demonstrated that he is a really high-class three-year old by scoring a clear cut win in the Templeton Handicap, for which he went out at a short price. Taking charge at the end of three furlongs he drew right away and had plenty in reserve to stall off a ldte effort by Donegal Bay.
