STOCK ROUTE AT RICHMOND

FARMERS' UNION TO SEEK SUPPORT FOR PROPOSAL The Nelson Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union is to contact the Progress League, Automobile Association and local members of Parliament in an effort to obtain a grant in the Public Works estimates for next year for the construction of a stock route from Richmond to the Nelson Freezing Company’s works at Stoke. This decision was reached at the monthly meeting of the executive. Advice was received that the Main Highways Board had no power to subsidise work on any route except a main road, which meant that the Waimea County Council would have to meet the full cost of the work if an alternative stock route was constructed. As this involved an estimated sum of £6OOO the council could take no action. It was stated that any land reclaimed by the road would belong to the adjacent property owners and not to the Harbour Board. After the proposal had been further discussed the aefion outlined above was decided on.
