HEAVY FIGHTING IN ITALY

GAINS MADE BY FIFTH ARMY PATROLS MAINTAIN CONTACT WITH ENEMY London, April 6. Fifth Army troops in the mountains dominating the Ligurian Plain south of Massa, in a surprise attack, captured some important feautres, reports an Allied communique from Italy. Heavy fighting continues. Eighth Army forces have occupied four small islands in the Comacchio Lake and strengthened positions on the sandspit south of Porto Garibaldi. Patrols on the remainder of the front have maintained contact with the enemy. Reuter’s correspondent says Fifth Army troops have pushed forward two miles in the first 24 hours of their new offensive south of Massa.
