HOLIDAY CRICKET
NELSON’S GOOD TOTAL MATCH WITH WELLINGTON TEAM G. L. WHYTE BOWLS WELL The first official cricket match to be played between Nelson and Wellington i for many seasons commenced at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. Wellington had five teams in the field over the holiday period so naturally the strength was divided, but the' side sent to Nelson proved to be a good all round | team. Following mid-week rain and heavy dews, the wicket was a little soft but played well. Nelson fiiade a good start, but faded away later, to come again in the later stages and put cn a reasonable score. Smith and Vass ran into the forties before a wicket fell, but later nve were down for 78. Much interest attached to the slow bowling of the Wellington captain. G. L. Whyte, wno has played for Wellington many *imes and it was he who did most of the damage. He effected the first separation and went on to secure eight for 87. Scoring was remarkably even and the highest score in the total of 211 was 33. Wellington started badly and had two down for 3, and in fact but for Fisher they would have fared badly. Playing very soundly, this batsman had nearly two-thirds of the runs off the bat when stumps were drawn at 5.50 p m. after a successful appeal against the light. Wellington had then scored 107 for the loss of eight wickets. The umpires are Messrs G. Wilson and C. H. Withers. Details: NELSON
