VALUE OF TREES

ITo the Editor] Sir, —Listening in to the broadcast to our forces in the Pacific I heard an item of how the roads could be beautified by the planting of trees, etc. To drive through leafy lanes with a possible glimpse of sea being a great joy, etc., is what I pointed out to an official during an instance of tree-cutting which I deplored. Some magnificent trees that must have given joy to the pioneers of Nelson province were ruthlessly slaughtered and used to bolster up the roadway on the beach at a neighbouring bay. Surely engineering ingenuity could do better than that? Articles on the planting of trees have been published in the Nelson “Mail” editorially and from prominent persons stressing the need to keep on planting trees. It is therefore very distressing to those persons who seek to preserve natural beauty that they can obtain no assistance against vandalism. Could the writers of articles on trees and other interested persons make an inspection of the several sections of native bush at Ruby Bay and advise the owners how they could improve and preserve them?—l am, etc., TOUJOURS PRET. Upper Moutere. 29th Sept.
