PENICILLIN PRODUCTION

I VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND BY SIR HOWARD FLOREY ' (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) Wellington. This Day. Professor Sir Howard Florey, the Australian scientist, will visit New Zealand in about a week’s time to discuss with the Government the production in New Zealand of penicillin. This announcement was made in the House of Representatives yesterday by the Minister in Charge of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research 'Mr Sullivan) when the estimates of the department were under consideration. Mr Sullivan said the question of the manufacture of penicillin in New Zealand hacl been under careful consideration and mould cultures had been secured from America for experimental purposes. It had been ascertained that it would be possible to manufacture the drug in the Dominion but the department did not intend to proceed with the manufacture in the meantime. “We are awaiting the arrival of Professor Florey before making a decision,” he added.
