GERMAN REINFORCEMENTS CENTRAL SECTOR OF GOTHIC LINE ALLIES REPEL COUNTERATTACKS (Rec. 10.15 a.m.) London, Sept. 26. Although the Gothic defence zone has been smashed on a wide front the enemy is attempting to make up for the loss by reinforcing the critical central sector with seasoned troops, says the Exchange Telegraph Agency’s Rome correspondent. The Germans are desperately making efforts to set up a new line along the forward slopes of high ground north of the Gothic Line. Americans have repelled three fierce counter-attacks four miles south-west of Castel del Rio. Eighth Army British troops further west cleared ground between the rivers Marecchia and Rubicon and forced a number of bridgeheads over the Rubicon against strong opposition. Fifth Army Americans made some progress north of Firenzuola against increased enemy resistance and have driven off three determined counter-attacks. British and Indians of the Fifth Army oh the right flank made important gains and captured two towns in addition to several dominating heights. The German overseas news agency says Allied detachments reached the Uso river, which flows into the sea about eight miles north of Rimini.
