NELSON TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

The August meeting of the Nelson Townswomen’s Guild was well attended. Mrs Muggeridge presided. After the usual business procedure the playreading circle read a play called “April Showers.” This was “well received. Afternoon, tea was served by the following ladies under the supervision of Mrs Wright: Mesdames West, Manson, Coxhill, Cox. Chittenden, Carruthers, Snodgrass and Miss Barnes. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs Hockey and her subject “post-war women.” Mrs Hockey spoke about New Zealand women and their organisations and emphasised the necessity for them to do their utmost to maintain peace when once it is gained. Her talk throughout was interspersed with flashes of humour and fittingly illustrated by quotations or verse. It was much enjoyed by all present. Mrs Hockey was presented with a bouquet of spring flowers. CIRCLE REPORTS The musical circle reports a visit to the W.D.F.U. at Wakapuaka on 19th July; when an enjoyable afternoon was spent. The solos were sung by Mrs Millar and Mrs Simson. Mrs West gave two recitations. On 28th July the circle helped entertain at the special afternoon for patriotic funds, a visitor Miss Cole singing two delightful solos, On 2nd August a start was made on the music for the Christmas party. On 10th August the handicraft circle had its monthly competition. This time it was for working aprons and peg bags. There were a number of entries. Miss Jennings came first and Mrs Howell second. On 28th July members had charge of a well-stocked stall at the special afternoon. Some are busy now making seagrass stools and mops while others are busy knitting for the Navy and Air Force. The play-reading circle has been holding its fortnightly meetings. This month there were two extra meetings in order to prepare for the open afternoon on 22nd August when a 3-act play “Dover Road” is to be read. At the special afternoon for patriotic funds on 28th July, the play “Love Uncle Henry” was read. Those taking part were Mesdames West, Wilson, Lusty, Hurrell and Wickens. The gardening circle meets every third Friday, and there are two competitions. This month the competition “best flower in my garden” was won by Miss Barnes. Mrs Andrews came second.
