AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION

MEETING OF NELSON EXECUTIVE j At the monthly meeting of the executive of the Automobile Association J (Nelson), which was hold last evening, the president, Mr C. M. Rout, presided and other members present were Dr. S. A. Gibbs, Messrs F. Smallbone, C. Hunter. W. R. Grace. H. Fraser, E. A. Bone, B. Bishop, V/. R. Martyn, A. Bcnsemann, E. Fleming. J. G. Ingram and E. R. Neale (secretary). The Association’s Patrol Officer. Mr N. M. McLaren, was also in attendance. Apologies were received from Messrs K. S. Farmer. J. A. Harley. H. J. Savage. W. FLOOD WARNING SIGNS Mr Bishop reported that recently when flood waters had covered the road at Appleby so,that small cars were unable to pass, the road signs at the corner of the road had not been changed and the “Road Open” sign had remained at either end of the stretch of road. He also stated that the marked posts at the roadside did not give a true indication of the depth of the flood waters. These matters were referred to the Patrol Officer to confer with the Public Works Department and to report to the committee. It was resolved to request the council to replace the red and white marking stakes and the white line at the edge of the road by the weigh-bridge on Haven roacl It was reported that the reserve at Aniseed Valley had become overgrown with gorse and the secretary was instructed to make arrangements to obtain the use of a flame-thrower and the services of a man to deal with the growth The Murchison County Council in s letter to the association requested financial assistance to restore the River View camping grounds to order before the forthcoming season. The matter was deferred pending a report on the grounds by the Patrol Officer. Mr Grace suggested that the association should consider the provision of more commodious rooms and better facilities for the use of members. After some discussion it was resolved to set up a small sub-committee comprising the chairman. Mr Grace, Dr. Gibb' and Mr Martyn. to investigate the matter. CHILD SAFETY EDUCATION The Patrol Officer reported that the Transport Department's Road Conduct Education Officer (Mr T. % W. S>ringer) had been in the Nelson district since 24th July. In company with him the Patrol Officer had visited Richmond, Brightwater, Mapua. Motueka. Riwaka. Brooklyn and Takaka schools, addressing 16 audiences totalling 952 children. The association had procured the film strip “Safe Walking” for exhibition to school children; Other films' had not yet been received. The Automobile Association (Wairarapa) offered the Nelson association the services of its senior patrol officer and fiill equipment including film projector in connection with the institution of the Child Safety Education campaign in the Nelson district. The Wairarapa association was thanked for its generous offer and the matter was referred to the sub-committee responsible for the campaign.
