IN CHARGE OF TANKS
FORMER PRISONER OF WAR Rugby, July 1® General Sir Richard O'Connor is in charge of the tank formations which are playing so great a part in the fighting in the Caen area, it is learned authoritatively. General O’Connor was a prisoner of war in Italian hands for two years. He was caught in North Africa, but eventually made his escape. It was General Montgomery's desire that General O’Connor should be given a
further opportunity to serve the Allied cause, as he was recognised as an outstanding tank expert. He had studied tanks since 1929. and had frequently expressed the view before the war that the tank would be one of the main weapons of modern warfare.
