LITERARY PENSIONS
PAYMENT DOUBLED Canberra, April 7. The Prime Minister of Australia, Mr J. Curtin, has approved of a recommendation by the committee of the Commonwealth Literary Fund that literary pensions should be increased from £1 to £2 a week. Strong representations had been made that £1 a week was inadequate, and because of the increased cost of living it had been necessary for many literary pensioners to supplement their grant by the old-age pension. Literary pensions were introduced by the beak in Government in 1908. The rate then adonted was £ 1 a week, and no increase since .hen has been made. There are 32 pensioners on the fund.
