TEACHER FAREWELLED

SOCIAL EVENING AT MAPUA A very largely attended social was held on a recent Saturday evening in the Presbyterian Church Hail to bid farewell to Miss Irene Walter who has held the position of assistant teacher at Mapua for the past four years and was leaving to take up a position at the Wakefield school.

The chairman of the School Committee, Mr Peter Tait, presided over the gathering, and an interesting programme of music and elocution was presented, items being given by Miss Joan and Master Stewart Tucker, Miss McKellar, Yvonne Boyd, Miss Austin, and Miss Margaret Hercus. Mrs C. Tucker was an efficient accompanist.

An enjoyable supper was served after which presentations were made to Miss Walter, on behalf of the Women’s. Institute by Mrs L. G. Wakefield, and on behalf of the W.D.F.U. by Mrs G. Fraser, Miss Walter having been an active office bearer in both organisations.

Mr F. A. Carling, representing the Nelson Education Board, spoke appreciatively of Miss Walter’s work, and his pleasure that in moving from Mapua to Wakefield she was not leaving the board’s district. Mr Tait, on behalf of the public of Mapua, presented Miss Walter with a set of H. V. Morton’s works as an expression of the esteem in which she was held and of the good wishes which would follow her to her new sphere of work.

Miss Walter expressed her thanks for the gifts and the kind thoughts which had prompted them and spoke of the appreciation she felt of the kindnesses received during her stay in the district.
