BRITISH EMPIRE UNITY
VIEWS OF LABOUR M.P. i (Rec. 10.25 a.m.) London, Feb. t ! “I do not underestimate the obstacles ! in the way of promoting further unity between the nations of the British Commonwealth,” said Mr E. Shinwell. Labour M.P. in a speech. “The dominions have become more powerful during the war. They have realised their growing importance in the war effort and may be suspicious of attempts to bring them under domination of a Government sitting in London. There must not be domination, either political or economic. “If there is to be complete understanding on economic issues and the Commonwealth’s vast resources are to be fully utilised for the good of all members, they. including Britain, must be ready to surrender some of their independence. This war has proved that no single member: of the empire is able to defend itself successfully against a powerful aggressor. We have so far succeeded in saving ourselves because the dominions rallied to our assistance To allow that co-op-eration to weaken or vanish when victory vv3s achieved would be a Calamity.”
