LABOURER SENT TO PRISON

Palmerston N. t Feb. 4. Eric Joseph McDonnell, labourer, aged 27, who was found guilty in the Supreme Court, Palmerston North, on Wednesday on three charges of unlawfully being in a boarding-house by night with intent to commit the crime of theft and being a rogue and a vagabond, appeared before Mr Justice Johnston for sentence to-day. Mr G. E. Rowe, for prisoner, said liquor was the main cause of his trouble and his behaviour while away from it was good. He and his wife had become reconciled after separation proceeds and he had treated her well and maintained her and their child. His downfall was wholly the result of liquor. His Honour said prisoner’s record was too bad to allow him probation, and imposed a sentence of 12 months’ imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent.
