DROUGHT AND EARTHQUAKES

[To the Editor] Sir, —No doubt many besides the Rev. Mr Alexander have been surprised that the heads of our churches have not ararnged for united prayers to be held for rain. It cannot be imagined that they are not aware of the serious consequences of the present drought or that they have lost faith in the efficacy of prayer, so their inaction is hard to explain. But it may be permissible to make a further suggestion. All readers of your paper must have been shocked by the accounts of the devastation and loss of life caused by terrible earthquakes in Argentina, Turkey and elsewhere. Never a year goes by without a number of such catastrophes occurring. Many people will think that they are more to be dreaded than even the worst droughts. No one will deny that the cessation of earthquakes would be an untold blessing to the human race nor will they deny that God is just as able to prevent earthquakes as He is to stop droughts. Why then while we are praying for the cessation of the drought should we not also pray that earthquakes may cease from the earth? We might thus save thousands of people every year from misery, suffering and death. I hope that this suggestion will receive the support of Mr Alexander and "Urgent.”—l am etc., FAITH CAN REMOVE MOUNTAINS. Nelson, 24th January.
