BOWLING TOURNEY

POST-SECTION PLAY HAWERA FOUR'S BIG WIN Dunedin, Jan. 23. One of the biggest sensations in the New Zealand bowling tournament occurred in the fours competition when post-section play continued on Saturday. The champion Canterbury four skipped by P. Munn was overwhelmingly defeated by the M. J. Squire's Hawera quartet, 23-4. At the end of the day C G. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.), and C. E. Tyrell (Roslyn) were the only two-lifers left in the competition. and R. Haworth (Canterbury), H. J. Mingins (Onehunga), M. J. Squire (Hawera) and J. B. Lawrie (Victoria, Wellington), were each left with one life.

As players became available from other competitions post-section play in the singles advanced still further, and by the end of the day’s play some of the matches in the seventh round had been decided. There are five players letf in the competition. M. J. Squire (Hawera) and W. J. Short (Pukekohe), both one-lifers, have still to play their match in the sixth round, and A. Clark (Ashbury, Timaru), the only two-lifer remaining, v/ill meet the winner in the seventh round. The others still in the competition are M. McKenzie (Te Rangi, Invercargill) and W. Gilbert (Kelburn).

In the fours. Munn’s team won the first game against A. W. MacDonald (Balmacewen), 22-16, but it showed a surprising reversal of form in the next round when outplayed by Squire’s four. D. H. Joseph, Munn’s second, was the most accurate drawing player of the team in this match, but the excellent combined play of the Hawera four was the deciding factor of the game that resulted in the elimination of Munn’s team from the competition. In the last game of the day Squire eliminated E. Ravenwood’s North-East Valley four, 23-19. With a few ends to go Ravenwood led 18-13, but Squire scored steadily, and with one end to go the score was 23-18. In the last end Ravenwood tried to kill the head, but went straight to the ditch. He was still alive, however, and scored one. Ravenwood’s four earlier had beaten W. Bremner (Auckland) in a game which was keenly fought all the way. J. Veitch (Dunedin) was defeated in the fourth round by Spearman, 24-19, and in the sixth round he met Spearman again. This time the Christchurch four was at the top of its form, Spearman winning 21-10. Spearman also defeated R. Haworth (Canterbury) by the big margin of 25 to 10, in the fifth round, this being Haworth’s first loss in post-section play. The Canterbury man retrieved his position ,however, in the next round, when he scored a comfortable win against J. Glover (St. John’s, Wanganui), 27-11. J. B. Lawrie (Victoria) still retained one life at the end of the day, as he defeated L. J. Edwards (Balclutha), 17-13, in the last game. Edwards being eliminated. GILBERT’S SINGLES PLAY In the singles W. Gilbert (Kelburn) won his first game of the day, against J. S. Anchor (Hamilton), 16-13, and in his next match, against .1. T. Adams (Phoenix, Oamaru), the Wellington man played much better bowls than he had done in the morning. The close finish indicated the general character of the game. Gilbert was two down on the nineteenth head. He drew two shots, neither of which was particularly close and, the bell having gone, this made the match a tie. An extra end was played and Gilbert gained one to win a well-contested game. Results: — SINGLES Sixth Round.—W. Gilbert (Kelbutn) 16, J. S. Anchor (Hamilton) 13; E. W. Taylor (Carlton) 22, N.
