In perfect weather and on gieeiis so fast that the hazards of the game were | increased immeasurably, the New Zea- , land championship bowling tournament entered the concluding stages to-day. The seventh and eighth rounds ol the post-section play m the fours competition were decided. Only two fours are left in, Christchurch R.S.A., skipped bv C G Spearman, and Roslyn, skipped by C E. Tyrrell. Play In the pairs competition was held up because of the participation of a number of bowlere in the other competitions, but the position was clarified somewhat to-day. The following teams remained in the pairs competition at the end of the dav: —E. Travers (St. Kilda), G C. Claridge (St. Kilda), N. Thomson (West End, Timaru), all of whom have qualified for the sixth round; D. H. Joseph (Canterbury), who is awaiting his opponent in the fifth round; J. B. Lawrie (Victoria, Wellington), who has reached the fourth round; and R. Haworth (Canterbury) and W. Bremner (Auckland), who qualified for the third round. , . The only match in the singles competition played to-day was that between M J. Squire (Hawera) and W J. Short (Pukekohe), which completed the sixth round of the competition. Those left in are the two-lifer, A. Clark (Ashbury Timaru). and the one-lifers, M. J. Squire (Hawera), W Gilbert (Kelburn), and M. McKenzie (Te Rangj, Invercargill). . Two two-lifers. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.) and Tyrrell (Roslyn) met in the fours and the local veterans went down 21-14. Spearman’s four were playing at the top of their form and again showed superior team work. Tyrrell had help only from McKay, his third man, and after the first four heads it was a stern chase all the way. In the one-lifer division, Haworth (Canterbury) and Lawrie (Victoria), went out. Mingins (Onehunga) established a lead of six in the first three heads against Haworth. After that the game was fairly even. Though Haworth got three on the last head, Mingins’s lead was sufficient to keep him in front, and he won 23-19. Squire (Hawera) followed up his sensational defeat of Munn with a decisive win over Lawrie The issue was not in doubt and Square finished 31-10. A delayed game in the second round of the pairs competition saw Bremner (Auckland) dispose of Hewitt (Alexandra), 21-11. Still having two lives C. G. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.) met J. H. Mingins (Onehunga), in a game which provided one of the most interesting displays of the day Mingins scored steadily over the first few ends and Spearman was frequently torced to drive, oiten unsuccessfully. Alter six ends had been played, Mingins led 7-2, but Spearman got one shot on the seventh end when he drove the jack into the ditch without disturbing the rest of the head The Christchurch team scored one on each of the next two einds. Onehunga lay three on the 10th end and then Spearman drove two shots out with the last bowl. Mingins put Spearman’s second bowl into the ditch and collected a three. Mingins 10. Spearman 5. Squire scored another single at the 10th. Good play by McKay and Tyrrell gave the Roslyn team three more at the 11th to make the scores 9-9, and thereafter Tyrrell went ahead rapidly. He scored a good four at the 12th, twos on the 13th and 14th ends, and another three on the 15th, giving him a lead of 20 to 9. A single to Tyrrell on the 16th end was followed by singles to Squire on the 17th and 18th and a three on the 19th. Tyrrell brought the score to 20 to 14 on the 20th and the game ended 22 to 16 when Squire cut the jack away Irom Tyrrell’s counters to gain two more points In the pairs competition R.
