EISENHOWER’S STAFF
RESPONSIBLE APPOINTMENTS Rugby, Jan. 23. As senior United States Army officer, General Eisenhower has assumed command of the European theatre of operations and the United States Army. In addition to his duties as supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force his first action on taking over his post as Commanding General of all United States forces, formerly held by Lieutenant-General Devers, was to put into effect an order streamlining headquarters in order to free officers and men for immediate field duties. The headquarters of the European theatre of operations has been consolidated with headquarters of Services Supply Genera] Eisenhower has appointed Major-General John C. H Lee, deputy commander of the European theatre of operations in addition to his duties as commanding general of Services Supply. Among the responsibilities assigned to General Lee is all the administration and supply for American forces in the United Kingdom and for continental operations. The deputy theatre commander will act in all appropriate cases for the theatre commander who will devote the major portion of his time to his post as supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces.
General Eisenhower has appointed Major-General Walter Bedell-Smith chief of staff of supreme headquarters of the Allied Expeditionary Force. General Smith has arrived in this theatre and assumed these duties as chief of staff of services of supply.
Colonel Royal B. Lord, has been appointed deputy-Chief of Staff in the European theatre of operations, in addition to his duties as Chief of Staff of services of supply.
