AIR FORCE ATHLETICS
MEETING AT BLENHEIM NELSON TEAM’S PERFORMANCE A team of athletes from the R.N.Z.A.F. Station, Nelson, travelled to Blenheim on Saturday to compete at a sports gathering in which teams from all the (Air Force stations in the northern part of the South Island participated. The sports meeting was held as a preliminary to an inter-services competition to be held in Wellington next month. An amateur athletic club was only recently formed at the Nelson station, and the team gave a very creditable performance at Blenheim, both the men and the W.A.A.F. representatives competing with success against the opposing teams.
The personnel of the Nelson team was as follows: —Cpl. M. Williams, W/Al C P Hayder, W/Al E. W. Gregor, W/Al L. M. O’Connor, W/Al H. Paegan, (all members of the W.A.A.F.); Ac.2 F R. Gribben, Ac.2 C. A. Haysen, Ac.2 G. A. Mustichan, Ac.2 Plunket, Cpl. R. A. Parkes, Ac.2 Shipman, Ac.2 J. W. Watson, L/Ac. C. G. Barry, L/Ac. G. H. Cleaver, Ac.2 F. Harris, Ac.l Read, Ac.2 McPike and Ac.2 A. D. Bell. Sgt. A. C. A. McDonald acted as manager. Placings secured by the Nelson team were as follows: — 100yds—1st heat: Gribben, 1. 2nd heat: McPike, 2; Haysen, 3. 3rd heat: Watson, 1: Bell 2. Final: Gribben 1; Watson, 2: McPike. 3; Haysen. 4 Time, 10£sec. 220yds—1st heat: Watson, 1; McPike, 3. 2nd heat: Haysen, 2. Final: McPike, 2; Watson, 3. Winner’s time, 22 4-ssec. 440vds—Read. 2 Winner’s time. 54 880yds—Read. 3. Winner’s time, 2min 4 3-ssec. One mile —Read, 2. Winner’s time, 5 min 5 3-ssec. Broad Jump—Gribben (18ft 6ins), 3. Hop, step and jump—Harris (33ft Sins). 3
