FIREFIGHTERS SAVE TOWN
Melbourne, Jan. 12. An all-night battle by 1000 fire-fight-ers saved the town of Beechworth, in north-eastern Victoria, 170 miles from Melbourne. Great fires rekindled from the dying embers of earlier blazes by strong winds extended over 50 miles through heavily-timbered country and menaced the town on three sides. Provided no unexpectedly strong wind arises, Beechworth is now considered out of danger.
