SECTIONAL PLAY FURTHER RESULTS Dunedin, This Day. Further results of sectional play of the New Zealand Bowling championships, whicn commenced yesterday, are as follows: Two champions seen in action on the North-East Valley green were G. A. Deare and A Williamson (Canterbury) Deare, who won the singles in 1940, had the closest game in the fourth round, when A. Donaldson (Dunedin) held him to a score of 18-14. Williamson, a member of the present champion four, did not qualify. D. Hunter (Petone), a member of the winning pairs in 1937, and D. H. Joseph (Canterbury), a member of the present champion Lours, each won five games. J. R. Smith (Hillwood), who was run-ner-up m 1941, did not qualify. Another surprise was the defeat of the present pairs champion, H. S. Maslin (Hawera), in his second game, but ne won four games in the section and went forward with one life. Maslin’s partner in the last pairs championship, M. J. Squire (Hawera), won all his games by comfortable margins. The following 17 players in the singles who won all five games qualified for post-section play with two lives: A. W. Macdonald (Balmacewen), L. C. Belcher (St. Kilda), A. Lemin and L G Mercer (Greymouth), and W. E Goodwin and W .T Goodwin (Upper Hutt). TO-DAY’S PLAY The tournament was continued this morning in dull weather. The second batch of 38 sections in the singles were engaged in their first two games on 19 greens. Ten sections of pairs also played on five greens. F. Farquhar (Logan Park) was omitted from the list of singles qualifiers. Howorth (Canterbury), who did so well in the section play in the pairs yesterday won his match against Mitchell (Caledonian) 20Clarke (Carlton), a fine player with many successes in Auckland to his credit, and singles champion in 1927, had a fairly close tussle with Ellis (Kaikorai). 20-15 on the same green. Anchor (Hamilton), lead of the champion pairs in 1939. started off confidently, but had to do his best to beat Jackson (North End. Invercargill). 19-14 Cook (NorthEast Valley) scored a good win against Redpath (Linwood) former fours champion. 21-9. T. Gray (Kelburn), one of the best known players in the Dominion, started off with a win against Wilson (Waihopai) 21-13. Donaldson (Ponsonby) registered one of the most decisive wins. 29-6 against James (Owaka). Two veterans in Day (Christchurch) a™ Rigby (Dunedin) met. Day winning 22-12. Young (West End, Auckland) won a high scoring game 22-21 against Mclnnes (Temuka). Macey (Nelson), a member of the winning pair at the Empire Games in 1938, was beaten in the first game by G. H. Smith (Edendale), 22-11. Tyrrell (Roslyn), one of the brightest players in the Dominion, and three times chamP* on champions in Dunedin, recorded a big win over W. J. Goodwin (Upper Hutt), 27-7. Veitch (Dunedin) former pairs champion, won by a wide margin . against Taylor (Beckenham) 21- Dennison (Auckland), skip of the Empire Games champion fours, lost his first game against a Wanaka player.
