FIGHTING IN MOUNTAINS Our troops, attacking in the morning met very stiff resistance but occupied several points in the mountains. In the afternoon they launched another attack and found that the Germans had evacuated positions which they were able to occupy and consolidate. These peaks dominate the village of Cervaro. On the Eighth Army front there was patrol activity by both sides in the course of which casualties were inflicted on the enemy. Enemy shelling in the upper section of the river Arriel is also reported. Our artillery was likewise active but the weather was just as bad in this section as on the Fifth Army front. An official communique says the Fifth Army front advance continues. American troops consolidated the heights previously taken while British troops pushed forward approximately a mile to seize a hill overlooking the road to Cassino and the river Garigliano.
