PACIFIC ISLANDS CONTROL
INTERVIEW WITH MR NASH Washington, Jan. 11. No sovereign or trustee nation should lose its rights in any islands of the Pacific, but a managing nation should be responsible for reports to an International Council for that area, so that policies, including security, the operation of international airlines and the welfare of the natives would be co-or-dinated This statement was made by the Hon. W. Nash, New Zealand Minister in Washington, at a Press conference. He said conversations were pending between New Zealand and the United States regarding the realignment of lend-lease. Some .commodities may be placed on the cash basis. New Zealand’s reverse lend-lease by the end of the year may be about equal to the United States lend-lease. New Zealand was willing to do her share in contributing to the international police or whatever body the United Nations designate. just as New Zealand contributed towards winning the war Mr Nash suggested that the Pacific Islands trusteeship include Anglo-Ame-rica. Australia and New Zealand. He omitted the Portuguese because their possessions were in different geographical areas. The United States might have some justification to claim the Marshalls and the Carolines after the I war. because of their proximity to Wake and Samoa.
