LENINGRAD’S ORDEAL
CONSTANT GERMAN SHELLING London, Jan. 10. While the great battle is progressing | in south Russia. Leningrad’s ordeal j goes on. The Moscow correspondent of ! ‘‘The Times’’ says that the German ! shelling is continuing by day and night, | and scarcely a building is unscarred. ! Anxiety and sleeplessness are placing a j heavy strain on the nerves of the in- 1 habitants. Most of the main streets have notices warning people to avoid the north side, which is exposed to the shellfire. Cinemas. shops and houses facing south are mostly closed. Theatre, audiences sit in their coats ready to leave and before taking their seats they are instructed in what order they should file out in the event of an emergency.
