JAP BASES HIT MARINES MAINTAIN PRESSURE AT BORGEN BAY (Rec. 1.15 p.m.) Sydney, This Day. General MacArthur’s bombers are pounding supply centres for Japanese forces hard-pressed by Australians and Americans on the north New Guinea coast. To-day’s South-West Pacific communique reports bombing strikes against Alexishafen. 88 tons: Madang, 44 tons; Bogadjim, 36 tons Allied light naval craft destroyed eleven barges off the coast. Seven of these were loaded with troops.
United States marines on Cape Gloucester, western New Britain, are maintaining pressure on the Japanese at Borgcn Bay. When American heavy bombers dropped 25 tons of explosives in a daylight raid on Kendari in the Celebes, they were intercepted by 13 Zeros. In 35 minutes’ running battles six Zeros were shot down and four others probably destroyed. One of our planes was lost.
