_ PUNTERS ASTRAY United States service personnel who go to the races in Australia are throwing their money away because they do not understand the local patois. In America, on the totalisator they bet for a win (first), place (first or second) or show (first, second or third). Here there is only a win (first), or place (first, second or third). So the visitors, backing a horse for a place, have been throwing their tickets away when their fancy came in third. One racegoer in Sydney has been paying his admission and spending his time picking up discarded tickets, paying particular attention to Americans. He told the course manager that he has made up to £ls in an after- 1 noon.
