CYCLIST’S NARROW ESCAPE
TRUCK CARRYING POWER POLES A cyclist in the.Maitai Valley nearly lost her life yesterday when passing one of the trucks delivering electric power line poles to the Valley. Passing the cab of the truck the cyclist skidded and went under the trailer. Fortunately the vehicle was stopped with the wheels of the trailer only about a foot from the cyclist. A further warning is given to all traffic on the Wangamoa and Rai hills and Maitai Valley that heavy lorries with trailers will be carrying 50-foot power poles over the roads during the next three weeks. When other traffic (including cyclists and pedestrians) is passing these vehicles it is necessary to stop. The long poles behind the trucks take up all the roadway on bends and corners and on the hill roads the rear of the poles projects some feet over the side of the road oji corners. Any car or cyclist endeavouring to swing round and pass one of these vehicles on a corner runs the risk of being severely injured by the projecting pole.
