TARAWA LANDING

MARINE CORPS CASUALTIES New York, Jan. 6. Total casualties of marines in the .Tarawa landing are somewhat less than the previously announced figure of 3583, said the Director of Navy Relations, Captain Lovette. Casualty reports still coming show that some men presumed dead have turned up alive and others reported missing have been found many miles distant with other units. The Navy Department announced there were 269 survivors of the escort carrier Liscome Bay sunk on 24th November. The total complement is undisclosed because she was a new type of ship, about which the Japanese presumably have scant knowledge. US. SUBMARINE LOST Washington, Jan. 6. The Navy Department announced the loss of the submarine Pompano, which operated in the immediate vicinity of the Japanese coastline.
