CANTERBURY CROPS BADLY AFFECTED
LITTLE BENEFIT FROM RECENT RAIN Inquiries made by a reporter of "The Press” revealed that the continued spell of dry weather throughout Canterbury is having serious effects on crops sown for harvesting this season, and. in some instances, on the fattening of stock. In several districts, farmers said that the position bfcd already gone too far for rain to be of much, if any, benefit. Oats and wheat in the Culverden district arc ripening off too early, farmers being forced to harvest them before good results arc obtainable. has been “burnt off” by the hot weather rathei than ripened normally Green feed has also been affected by the dry spell, and farmers have had to send away drafts of lambs which otherwise would have been retained Cor. further fattening. Even if rain comes within a few days, it is considered that it will not do much good. The brief showers experienced during last weekend had practically no effect, the country drying up rapidly on the following day.
