VEGETABLE GROWING
[ AGRICULTURAL CLUB PROJECTS AWARDS AT TAHUNANUI SCHOOL Keen interest was displayed by the members of the Tahunanui School Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club in the mixed vegetable plot projects. Six-ty-eight entries were received for the competition, the work being carried out by the children at their own homes. The judging of the competition was undertaken by the club’s adult garden and field crop supervisors, Messrs G. Beatson and J. Logan, and the excellent standard of the garden plots was shown by the high marks awarded in all sections. Due to the large number of entries the projects were grouped for judging into three sections and a prize for each section is to be awarded by the club’s adult committee. The results were as follows: Senior group (Forms 1 and 2).—Peter Hitchcock (90 marks), 1; Douglas King (83 marks), 2; Shirley King and Betty Jamieson (81 marks), 3 equal. Intermediate group (Stds. 3 and 4). Ross McNabb (98 marks), 1; Gerald Bullen (91 marks), 2; Valerie Hansen (83 marks), 3. Junior group (Stds. 1 and 2).—John Renton (99 marks), 1; Dennis Coughlin (95 marks), 2; Desmond Win (91J marks), 3, Paul Frumerin (91 marks), 4. In judging the two senior groups account was taken of the notebooks kept by members in conjunction with the project. In these notebooks detailed records were kept showing a plan of the plot planting table, preparation of soil, diseases noticed and treatment given and any other notes of interest in connection with each individual plot. After announcing the awards, the adult supervisors addressed the members and gave them instruction and advice on their gardening projects.
