TELEPHONE INVESTMENTS

OPPORTUNITY TO-NIGHT MR C. MILNER’S ADVICE “Readers of ‘The Mail’ will no doubt view with pride the proud position in which the Nelson district stands in comparison with other postal districts of the Dominion in its War Loan effort,” stated the chairman of the War Loan Committee (Mr C. Milner) this morning. “On a percentage basis we are ahead of all other places and if we are to hold that honoured lead and be the first to reach the target it will call for a united effort of the city and country. I think the Mayor (Mr E. R. Neale) placed the matter in its true perspective when he referred on Saturday to the effect such news would have on the men overseas from our own district knowing that we are backing them. “Can we not raise the balance quickly?” asked Mr Milner. “It has been arranged for the benefit of those who have not yet contributed to do so by telephone to-night. As will be seen from the advertising columns of ‘The Mail,’ certain telephones will be staffed between 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock tonight to receive promises of investments. “To those Savings Bank depositors not requiring their money for three years, the loan offers a splendid investment with an increase of £ per cent, in interest on any sum converted to National Savings. Any amount up to £IOOO can be so invested. There are also bonds at £1 or £lO as well as stock at 2£ and 3 per cent.” CAMPAIGN NOTES To-day’s communqiue from Nelson’s war loan headquarters reads:— Richmond’s Goal in Sight “With only £7OOO to go Richmond district should be well up in the next list of full quotas. The committee is making a solid effort to attain its objective by noon to-morrow. Are you helping to the fullest extent of your finances?” The Right Attitude Richmond gentleman, over 80 years of age, last week invested in the Loan £5 which he had saved for little personal comforts* This is real sacrifice.” A Suggestion “To assist in reaching Nelson’s target to-morrow the committee suggests National Savings groups make an advance payment on this occasion.” PRIDE OF OLD NELSONIAN Pride at Nelson’s achievement in the Liberty Loan campaign was expressed by a former Nelsonian, Mr W. J. Bannehr, of Christchurch, in a telegram received by the Mayor of Nelson (Mr E. R. Neale) to-day. The telegram read: “As an old Nelsonian I am proud of my native city being the first to ovor-subscribe its quota of the Liberty Loan. Hearty congratulations.”

Mr Bannehr, whose father was a former editor of “The Colonist,” left Nelson some 38 years ago.
