The Rival backs saw more of the ball than their opponents but poor handling spoiled their movements. By half-time, however. Rival were leading by 8 points to 5.

In the second spell Rival completely changed their tactics and settled down to determined offensive play. The forwards, working in close co-operation with the backs, repulsed Army’s attacks and hammered repeatedly at the opposition's defences. A feature of the game was the kicking of Hopkins, the Army second fiveeighths. The teams were as follows:

The Rival backs went into operation and Kotua sprinted away but was forced to kick and Palmer saved. Rival backs returned to the attack but solid tackling broke up their movements. Hopkins made an opening and tried to run around the opposition but he was brought down. In a Rival attack McKenzie sent the ball out to his backs and it was handled to Samuels on the wing who dived through but he was short of the line. Trewavas broke away and reached the half-way line before he was tackled. Chapman made a spectacular save when the Rival defences were being hard pressed. He received the ball close to the line, put on a burst of speed and kicked to touch well outside his twenty-five. Dooney suddenly broke away but was tackled. He passed to Kotua and the five-eighths scored in the corner. Burn failed to convert. Rival 3, Army 5.

Griffiths broke away and the ball was kicked over the line but McKenzie picked up and kicked out. McKenzie again gained possession near the 10-yard line, ran around and kicked.
