LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

SUGGESTION CONCERNING RETURNED MEN -Wellington, This Day. During the debate on the Finance Bill No. 2, in the Legislative Council, the Hon. M. Connelly (Otago) advocated the lowering of the standard of examination fitness required for ex-soldier students, by granting passes for lower marks than usual. This was not to apply in professions involving safety of human life, but in others, such as accountancy.

. The Leader of the Council, the Hon. D. Wilson (Wellington) said that the suggestion and hundreds of others concerning returned servicemen were receiving and would receive the earnest consideration of the Government.

The Hon. T. Bloodworth (Auckland) commented on the fact that the Bill gave authority for borrowing for war expenses £300,000,000, whereas in 1939 the borrowing authority was £10,000.000.

The Bill was passed, and the Council adjourned until 21st July.—P.A.
