LEAGUE OF LOCAL BODIES

MR F. H. NKSTAN’S PROPOSAL HIGHWAYS COUNCIL’S CONGRATULATIONS The opinion that the formation of the Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast League of Local Bodies had resulted in the best feeling that had ever existed between the Nelson and Marlborough provinces and in a mutual spirit of goodwill and co-operation, was expressed at the annual meeting of the No. 11 District Highways Council to-day. Mr A. H. Nees (Marlborough County Council) pointed out that it was at the annual meeting of the council twelve months ago that Mr F. H. Newman first presented his plan for the formation of the league and he wished to congratulate Mr Newman on the result of his proposal. The movement had brought the Marlborough and Nelson provinces closer together, had broken down any ill-feeling which might have existed between them and they were now pulling together in a manner which had never been experienced before, said Mr Nees. He felt sure that the two districts would continue to co-operate and that the league would result in benefit to the whole area. The league was the direct outcome of the ideas put before the council meeting twelve months ago and he moved that the Council congratulate Mr Newman on the success of his proposal. Mr F. W. Lindup, the chairman, in seconding the motion, said that Mr Newman’s proposal had met with universal approval, a®d the manner in which it had been accepted by the local bodies showed that Mr Newman’s ideas had had a sound basis. The motion was then carried. In reply Mr Newman thanked the meeting for its motion. He said he was sure that the Nelson and Marlborough provinces were now pulling together and that they would continue to do so. The work of the league would no doubt have farreaching effects and that great benefits would result from it when peacetime activities were re-commenced.
