SNOW STORM IN CANTERBURY
WORST FOR MANY YEARS TELEGRAPH POLES SNAP Christchurch, June 30. The inland areas of Canterbury experienced the worst snow storm for years last night. The coastal area was not badly affected, but the storm cut telegraph and telephone communications with places inland. Heavy steel poles carrying power lines were bent over and wooden poles snapped like match sticks under the weight of the snow. Telegraph circuits from the North were broken this morning, but later radio communications were established. Trains were delayed on all lines. Bus services were also badly disorganised. Power supply was also interrupted. At Ashburton telephonic communication with country districts was cut off. Twelve inches fell at Winchmore, 12 miles inland, and the Methven mail contractor turned back. There was extensive damage to electric reticulation. Barely an inch fell in the town.—P.A.
