EVIDENCE BEFORE SENATE COMMITTEE VIEWS OF DEPUTY-CHIEF OF STAFF Washington, June 29. The United Nations are rapidly approaching final victory, said Lieuten-ant-General McNarney, Deputy-Chief of Staff, before the Senate Appropriations Committee. H e added that the war would be brough home to Japan in such a manner that the whole empire would feel the full impact in a most violent and destructive way. Senator Gurner warned Lieut.-Gen. McNarney that there was a growing impression that »he war would be over by Thanksgiving Day, therefore he questioned the advisability of using the word “rapidly.” Lieut.-General McNarney admitted that “rapidly” might be a slight overstatement, but added: “We have made enormous progress in training and equipping our armies for combat. The recent conferences between Mr Churchill and President Roosevelt will bring further successful offensive action. Thi United States Army now totals 6,800,000, and will attain the goal of 7,500,000 next year. Our operations in the Pacific had turned the tide of the Japanese advances into gradual withdrawal toward their home bases. The United States now holds the initiative in the Pacific.” He added that first line planes were being sent to General MacArthur and General Chennault. —P.A.
