SALE AT AUCTION

STEAMSHIP KAIWARRA STRANDING AT MOT UNA U RECALLED Next Friday, the steamship Kaiwarra and her cargo are to be sold by public auction in Christchurch. The vessel and cargo are to be offered in two separate lots. The first will include the hull, gear and machinery of the vessel. The cargo of Newcastle coal (originally 5000 tons) which is lying in or about the vessel, will be sold as a separate lot. The ship is to be sold as she lies stranded near Motunau, about 40 miles north of Christchurch. The Kaiwarra, which was owned by the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd., went ashore on the beach at Motunau, North Canterbury, about midnight on December 3, 1942. Unsuccessful attempts were made to refloat the vessel, but on December 6 she was firmly aground about 600 yards from the shore, opposite Black Birch creek and about a mile and a half north of Motunau Island. The officers and crew of the ship, numbering 45, were taken off by the Sumner lifeboat Rescue 11. On December 7, a quantity of gear was salvaged from the Kaiwarra by a small steamer in a calm sea.

At the Court of Inquiry which was held following the wreck, it was announced that the cause of the mishap was a strong set running in a northerly or north-westerly direction, which threw the vessel some miles off her course, and caused her to be stranded and subsequently wrecked. The ship was eventually holed by the rocks when she was pounded by heavy seas after the stranding. The Kaiwarra was built by J. Blumer and Company at Sunderland in 1919. She is a steel steamer of 3051 tons gross, and the principal dimensions are: Length, 331.3 feet; breadth, 46.8 feet; depth, 23.2 feet.
